Chapter One: Introduction

1.1 Background of the Study

Community radio has been recognized as a powerful tool for fostering civic engagement and political participation, particularly among youth. In Kankia Local Government Area, Katsina State, community radio serves as a platform for discussing political issues, encouraging youth participation in the political process, and promoting democratic values. The role of community radio in shaping political attitudes and behaviors among young people is critical in a country like Nigeria, where youth make up a significant portion of the electorate but often remain disengaged from political processes (Oluwaseun & Ibrahim, 2023; Bello & Zubair, 2024). This study examines the influence of community radio on youth political engagement in Kankia, focusing on how it encourages political participation and fosters a sense of civic responsibility.

1.2 Statement of the Problem

While community radio has the potential to enhance political engagement, youth participation in the political process in Kankia LGA remains low. Factors such as limited access to information, political apathy, and inadequate civic education contribute to this disengagement. Although community radio has been used to promote political awareness, its effectiveness in motivating youth political participation in Kankia LGA has not been thoroughly studied. This research seeks to address this gap by exploring the influence of community radio on youth political engagement in the region.

1.5 Research Hypotheses

1. Community radio significantly influences youth political engagement in Kankia LGA.

2. The effectiveness of community radio in promoting youth political participation varies across different demographic groups in Kankia LGA.

3. Challenges such as political apathy and limited access to media affect the success of community radio in fostering youth political engagement.

1.6 Significance of the Study

This study emphasizes the importance of community radio in promoting youth political participation and enhancing democratic values. By focusing on Kankia LGA, the research provides insights for media practitioners, policymakers, and civic organizations working to increase youth engagement in the political process.

1.7 Scope and Limitations of the Study

The study is limited to the influence of community radio on youth political engagement in Kankia Local Government Area, Katsina State. It does not include other forms of media or regions.
